Literature Text

Gary and Duke both walked down the beautiful route known as Route 1 together. They haven’t even met a single pokémon yet, and both of them were anxious as to what they were going to get. The sun was still high in the sky as it graced the beautiful route with its beams of warm light. They were about half way through Route 1 when an idea popped into Gary’s head.

Gary: Hey Duke, how about a little bet?

Duke: Huh? What do you have in mind Gary?

Gary: Three things. One, for each new route, cave, or body of water that we come across, we can only catch one pokémon. Two, if any of our pokémon faint in a battle of any kind, we can’t use that pokémon again for the duration of the bet. And finally three, either of us will automatically lose if our entire party of pokémon faint.

Duke: Ooookay….Those are some heavy conditions. How do you win?

Gary: The way to win this bet is to beat the Elite 4 and beat Champion Lance himself.

Duke: That sounds impossible as it is. What’s in it for the winner?

Gary: We’ll think about the prizes later. So how about it?

Gary offered his hand to officially start the bet with Duke, who looked cautiously at his hand. On instinct, Duke grabbed Gary’s hand and shook it.

Duke: You’re on!

Rustle….rustle…

The two friendly rivals turned their heads towards a tree on the route that rustled with a bit of life. In the clear sunlight, the pair saw two Pidgeys perched up there in the branches fast asleep nuzzled against each other. The two trainers threw out their starter pokémon in order to catch the two bird pokémon in the trees.

Duke: Kame, go get their attention please.

Gary: Bulby, you too.

The two pokémon made their way to the tree with an idea of how to get the two Pidgeys’ attention.

Kame: Hello up there!

The Pidgeys woke up from their afternoon nap with quiet yawns. Both of them looked down at Kame and Bulby before they swooped down towards Duke and Gary.  Both of the trainers flinched a little at the sudden advance, so they did what any reasonable trainer would do in the situation.

Duke and Gary: Pokéball go!

The instant the pokéballs made contact against the bird pokémon, they were captured. The pokéballs dropped to the ground and shook for quite some time before they both clicked. After the signal that the capture was complete, Duke walked up the pokéball she threw and sent out the Pidgey. The bird pokémon looked at Duke for a moment before he flew up to her shoulder and perched on it.

Duke: I’m going to call you August.

Got August!
Species: Pidgey
Gender: Male
Met at Level 2 at Route 1

August cooed in response to the name given to him and rubbed up against Duke’s cheek.

Duke: I think he likes me Gary, what about your Pidgey?

Duke turned over to Gary whose Pidgey was asleep at his feet. Gary looked down at the Pidgey with a monotone face on as he returned it back to its pokéball.

Gary: He’s going to need some training… Oh yeah! Duke, follow me. I’ve got a great place we can catch more pokémon.

Gary led the group through Viridian City and into Route 22 where they saw the badge check area that lead to Victory Road. Gary and Duke searched through the grass of Route 22 to see what they could find, but unfortunately they didn’t find a thing. They sent out their pokémon in hopes that they would cover more ground and find new teammates.

Duke: Find anything guys?

Kame: We found a friend.

August cawed with happiness in response which made Duke turn around to see what they found. It was a little, purple spotted rodent. Duke has seen this kind of pokémon before, it was a Nidoran, and a male one at that. Duke noticed that it stared right at her, not sure whether to run from fear, or to try and make friends with Duke. Duke took a knee as she extended a peaceful hand towards the Nidoran. The Nidoran recoiled at the advancement, but slowly warmed up and nuzzled against Duke’s hand. Duke giggled a little as she carefully picked up the little Nidoran and held him close to her.

Duke: I’m going to call you Ben.

GOT Ben!
Species: Nidoran (Male)
Gender: Male
Met on Route 22 at Level 3

Duke taped the little Nidoran on the head with her pokéball, and the Nidoran happily let himself be caught. Kame and August cheered on the sidelines at the new addition to the team while Gary clapped at Duke’s capture.

Gary: Nicely done Duke. You seem to be having more luck than me right now. I haven’t found a thing yet.

Duke: You’ll find something you nut.

Gary: Only if you stop catching all the good stuff.

The two friends laughed at their friendly banter because they both knew that neither of them meant what they said. Gary stayed behind in Route 22 while Duke moved on to the next point of interest on her own, Route 2. However, there was a more current situation to take care of for the team, lunch. The team was all out of their pokéballs and waited in one area as Duke went off to get some food from the Viridian City Pokémon Center. The three pokémon sat reposed against the trunk of a tree and looked up into the sky.

Kame: Sooo…Can any of you talk?

August gave a negative quiet caw as his way of saying no.

Ben: I can talk…

Kame: Huh, I thought your voice would sound wonky and screechy, but I was wrong.

Ben: Heeey….

Kame: Don’t worry little dude, it’s a compliment. Your voice sounds sweet and innocent, like a little brother. You know what I mean August?

August chirped happily in agreement while Ben blushed a bit at the complement. Then, out of nowhere a purple rat bursted out of the nearby grass with a ravage look in its eyes.

Rattata: WREEEATH!
Kame: Woah! Everyone get behind me now!

The Rattata did not take too kindly to that suggestion and tackled head first into Kame. The force was enough to knock Kame on the back of her shell, which left her defenseless or so the Rattata though.

Kame: Ah come on, I hate it when this happens.

The Rattata had its back turned to Kame as it started down August and Ben. Its eyes showed nothing but anger as it breathed heavily on the verge of pouncing. Ben had his ears over his eyes while August had his feathers all ruffled to try to intimidate the Rattata away.

Rattata: WREEEATH!

Kame: Allllsey oop!

THUD!

With a spring from her tail, Kame landed on top of the feral Rattata in an act to both protect her team mates and subdue the Rattata. The Rattata clawed at the ground to get out from under Kame’s weight, but to no avail.

Kame: Oh come on, I’m not that heavy.

Before the Rattata could scream again, Kame went inside her shell and spun around on the Rattata’s back to silence it and weaken it further. With another spring of her tail, Kame popped out of her shell as she spun around in circles through the air. She did enough damage to the little Rattata, now all that was left to do was to wait for Duke to come back a-

CLICK!

Duke: Sweet! New teammate guys, you guys excited?

Ben and August worriedly looked at each other while Kame gave a thumbs up to Duke. Duke went over to the pokéball, and sat down by the same tree trunk as she passed out food to everyone.

Duke: So what should I name this pokémon?

Ben: How about Wreath?

GOT Wreath!
Species: Rattata
Gender: Female
Lv. 3 at Route 2

Duke: Good idea Ben…Wait what the?!

So that's how the nuzlocke works in this run. Neat! I do really like that you have these two as friendly rivals rather than Gary being his usual mean self. The new teammates sound interesting, and it looks like Kame is a natural leader.
