The day was quiet in the small town known as Pallet Town. The trees danced softly in the wind, as the sun began to set on the horizon. The clouds in the sky were a wonderful tint of orange as they formed various beautiful shapes. Not a single bird pokémon was in the sky, which made the sky all the more beautiful in its own way. A teenage girl sat on the docks of the town as she looked down the water of Route 21. The water gently swayed back and forth against the docks as the girl began to get up from her current position. Today was the day she turned 15, and she only asked for one thing from her parents. A Trainer case, so that she could go out to explore the world as a Pokémon Trainer. She was going to rise through the ranks of the trainers, beat the gym leaders, and beat Champion Lance himself. Then, everyone would know her name, Duke.

The next day…

Duke was sound asleep in bed, and wouldn’t give a damn about the world outside. That was until she remembered that today was the day that she could possibly go on her adventure. With that thought, her brown eyes shot open as she scrambled to get out of bed.

Duke: Crap, crap, crap!

She finally got out of the warm comfort of her bed’s comforters, but she was soon greeted by the hard wooden floor. Duke got up quickly again and rushed downstairs where her mother was.

Duke: Mom! How long did I oversleep?!

Duke’s Mother: Oh no sweetie, you’re good on time. But please get dressed, I don’t think pajamas are fitting for a new trainer.

With the speed like an Electrode Duke rushed back upstairs, and looked at her wardrobe to see what she could wear. Duke quickly grabbed and put on her favorite blood red shirt, then soon practically jumped into her denim shorts and ran back down the stairs.

Duke: See ya Mom, I love ya!

Duke’s mother waved good bye to her daughter as she rushed out the door into the town. A smile grew on her face as she remembered back when Duke just learned to walk, and now her daughter was going off on her own journey. Just that thought made her eyes start to water with tears of joy.

Duke’s Mother: It’s going to be a lot quieter around here now…

At the entrance to Route 1…

Duke ran as fast as she possibly could with excitement in her eyes. The unknown that was the tall grass was about to be discovered. Just a couple more steps….

???: Whoa! Wait a moment now!

Duke panicked internally as she dug her heels into the ground in an attempt to stop herself. Although she stopped herself, Duke was pissed at whoever tried to stop her. She snapped her head at whoever called out to her and saw an old man in a white lab coat, which was over a red buttoned down shirt. The man’s bushy eyebrows were lowered with exhaustion, and his hand was out towards Duke as if to stop her.

Duke: Who the hell are you?

The old man finally got his breath back and chuckled lightly as he walked towards Duke.

???: My most sincere apologies for interrupting your little adventure into the tall grass. But by a glance, I can’t see a single pokéball on you. You seem like you don’t have a single pokémon at the moment. Am I right young man?

At the last words, Duke’s internal anger spiked immensely. She absolutely hated when she was confused as a guy! It was a tiny fault in her that went back to her childhood with the kids she would play with. This would get her into some trouble with some parents. Some part of her understood why some people would confuse her for a dude because of her body and her hair, but it was overridden by her severe hatred for the confusion.

Duke: Young man?! I am a girl you blind old man!

???: Apologies, I’m not good with determining genders by sight. But my question still stands. You don’t have a pokémon, right?

Duke: Uhh, no…I thought I could just go and explore.

???: Nonsense, the wild pokémon out there are dangerous and ferocious. If you were to take just one step out there, you would be jumped by several wild pokémon at once. It would be best if you would follow me to my lab so I can fix that little problem of yours.

The old man turned on his heel with a friendly smile on his face and walked slowly towards the lab of the esteemed Professor Oak. Finally, the gears in Duke’s head turned as she now realized that the old man was none other than Professor Oak himself. Duke cursed herself for the outburst she had and ran towards the professor. After a rather short walk, the two walked through the door of the large building and Duke was blown away at the sight in front of her. There were about three very large floors inside the building, which included the very floor Duke and Oak came through. Each floor seemed to be packed to the brim with a prolific amount of bookshelves, books, and large machinery. Scientists and assistants were all in the middle of their own experiments, and were so caught up in it, that they barely realized  that Oak came back. Professor Oak didn’t seem to mind this and walked all the way to the back of the building where his office was located. Duke followed him as she was practically giddy at the thought of her own pokémon. They arrived at Professor Oak's office where a person was slumped down in a chair. The person gently tilted his head up like he had just woken up from a nap as he heard the footsteps of both Duke and Professor Oak. He got up slowly, but his back was still turned towards the professor and Duke.

???: Gramps, is that you? God you took so long that I feel asleep, literally.

Duke: Gary?

The person turned around quickly after he heard Duke speak as a smile grew on his face.

Gary: Duke! Long time no see!

Gary quickly ran up to Duke, but since his grandpa was there, Gary just patted Duke on her back.

Professor Oak: Now then, since I know you kids don’t like when old people ramble on. I’m going to just get to the best part. Which is giving a new generation of trainers their very first pokémon. Duke, since I confused you for a boy earlier, I feel that the best way to make up is to let you choose first.

Duke: Seriously? Oh nononono! It’s my fault, please let me forgive for yel-

Gary: Just choose already Duke. He’s not going to budge at all. Where do you think I get my stubbornness from?

A moment of silence went through the room as a mischievous grin grew on Duke’s face.

Duke: Your…

Gary: Don’t answer th-

Duke: Mama!

Gary: Welp, I walked right into that one.

Duke patted Gary’s back as she picked up a pokéball with her free hand.

Duke: Yes, yes you did. Anyways, I choose this pokémon.

Professor Oak: Ah Squirtle, an excellent choice.

Duke pressed the button on the center of the pokéball and it opened up as a blue turtle pokémon popped out of it. Luckily, Duke was able to catch it under its arms before it landed on the floor. It opened its brown eyes halfway and saw Duke. It didn’t panic, in fact Duke swore that it became even more relaxed in her hands.

Squirtle: Sup?

Duke: Wow, you’re pretty chill. I’m going to call you Kame.

Kame: Cool.

Got Kame!
Species: Squirtle
Gender: Female
Met at Lv. 5 in Professor Oak's Lab

Professor Oak: But before you go off lollygagging on your journey, I need you to do one last thing Duke.

Duke: Hmm? What is it Professor?

Professor Oak: I just need you to go and get a package for me over at Viridian City, which isn’t far from here.

Duke: Sure. Let’s go Kame.

Kame: Right behind you.

Duke set Kame down and was about to go before she heard another pokéball open. She turned around and saw some blueish green pokémon at Gary’s feet.

Gary: How about a little sparring match before you leave, eh?

Duke: Sure, ready to brawl Kame?

Kame: I’m ready.

One tackle fest later…

Duke: That was a pretty good match, but Kame prevailed! You got your butt handed to you by a girl, just like ol’ times.

Gary: A girl who looks like a boy.

Gary would soon come to regret those words as before Gary knew it, he was outside in the dirt with a very deep imprint of a skate board shoe on the butt of his pants. His Bulbasaur quickly scampered over and nuzzled against Gary’s head to at least comfort his new trainer. Gary cringed as he rubbed the area he was kicked in with one hand, and petted his Bulbasaur with the other. He froze when he heard Duke’s footsteps come out of the lab with a pissed off look on her face.

Gary: Yep, now it’s definitely like ol’ times…

The Bulbasaur whimpered as it knew that its attempt to make Gary happy had failed. Gary got up slowly and picked his Bulbasaur like a baby.

Gary: Ah no worries little buddy. I’m used to this by now, and this isn’t even the worst she’s done.

What happened in that short span of time was that Duke ran behind Gary, wound up for a powerful kick, and unleashed the kick on Gary’s butt. No ill long term effects will fall on Gary, but he will not be able to sit down for quite a while. With that said, Duke and Kame were both on their way to Viridian City where they encountered no pokémon. This was probably for the best as the two talked to each other and were in the middle of the construction of a beautiful, strong relationship. They arrived quickly at Viridian City, but since they were on a mission, they didn’t take in the scenery. The duo picked up Oak’s package, and headed back to the lab. Luckily, there was a short cut back to the town which cut the time to get back to the town immensely. The package wasn’t even very heavy as Duke carried it in both of her hands with relative ease, and she was able to balance an asleep Kame on her head. Duke entered the lab once again, and was still not used to how big it was on the inside.

Duke: Hey Professor! I got your package!

Professor Oak: Excellent! Bring it over here, please.
Duke followed the Professor’s voice back to the Oak’s office, where she and Gary got their starters in. Conveniently, Gary was also there as he sat in a nearby chair, but he sat on top of a bag of ice to tend to his kicked butt. Duke felt a little guilty for Gary, but she shook it off and placed the package on the Oak’s desk as he opened it instantly. He pulled out ten pokéballs and handed them to Duke and Gary.

Professor Oak: Ah, thank you for picking these up Duke. I knew I ordered them at just the right time. These pokéballs shall aid you in your journey, as will these little things.

He pulled out two small red devices from his lab coat, and also gave them to the two trainers.

Professor Oak: The device I just gave you two is called a Pokédex. Within it, is all the information you’ll need about pokémon you will encounter on your journey. Through efficient uses of both of these items, you will be a great trainer in no time.

Duke looked at the red device in her hand and tears began to well up in her eyes.

Duke: S-so this is it? This is where my journey as a trainer begins?

Professor Oak: Yes.

Duke: And you have no more weird requests?

Professor Oak chuckled as he walked over to pat to Duke on the back.

Professor Oak: Oh-hohoho, no dear. You’ve already done quite enough for me, but there is one thing that I would like for the both of you to do.

Gary: Wait! Don’t tell me…

Professor Oak stood with a smile on his face as he waited patiently for Gary to think of what he wants both trainers to do.

Gary: Is it to complete the pokédex?

Professor Oak: Nope, the pokédex is already completed. It has all the data of all the Kanto pokémon, and all you trainers have to do is find those pokémon.

Gary and Duke: So what do you want us to do?

Professor Oak breathed in deeply for the mini speech he was about to deliver.

Professor Oak: I want the two of you to be the very best. Like no trainer ever was. I don’t want you two to think that catching pokémon and training them as your true test or cause. You both will travel across Kanto, searching both far and wide for new pokémon. But know that every single pokémon has a power inside that makes it unique, some pokémon that require a trainer to unlock it, while other pokémon already have the power. It will be your job, as a trainer, to know the power that is inside each and every single one of your pokémon. And to know the power, you must unlock it.

Gary: Wow Gramps that was deep…

Professor Oak: I am not done yet. For there are evil people in this world that want to use the power inside pokémon for evil. You must try and defend the world from those people by defeating them! It will be a learning experience for the both of you, and the power of the courage inside both of you will pull you through. But I’m getting too deep into the evil part. Look, I’ll just skip to the point of this conversation. My final words to you two, before you go out into this new world that has opened up to you…is to be careful and safe. Please.

Gary: I’ll be extra cautious. You will too right little guy?

Bulbasaur: Aye!

Duke: I can at least try to be a little safer.

Kame: Same.

Professor Oak: Alrighty then, I think it would be great if I get to see the two of you go off then, and start your journey.

With a nod, Duke and Gary returned their pokémon and made their way to the entrance of Route 1. There, at the entrance, was Duke’s mother and Gary’s sister Daisy. Both Duke and Gary were hugged by together which caused them both to blush out of embarrassment. Duke was about to groan until her mother handed her a small wrapped up box. Duke’s eyes shimmered with glee as she practically snatched the box from her mother’s hand and returned the hug. With quick speed she removed the wrapping of the box and lifted the cover of the box. Inside the box was the one thing she wanted for her birthday, her very own Trainer Case. Duke was now an official trainer, and she couldn’t be happier.

Daisy: And just so that the two of you don’t get lost. Have these Town Maps, which will come in handy a lot.

Duke and Gary accepted the Town Maps and turned their attentions towards Route 1. The first step of their adventure was about to begin, and everything was going to change for the better or worse. Both trainers, no…both childhood best friends were ready. They looked down the path, grabbed onto each other’s hands, and slowly took their first steps into the route along with their first steps into the open world of Kanto.

END OF CHAPTER!
Hello everyone and first let me thank you all for reading through the very first chapter of Hazardous Red. Hopefully, you have enjoyed the read and now it's time to set some rules.
Rules for Hazardous Red:
-I can only catch one pokémon per area
-I must nickname my pokemon
-I can heal during battles
-I can catch legendries
-Gift pokémon of any kind do not count as the encounter for the area
-If any pokémon faints in anyway, be it grinding up for levels, or in an intense battle. They are dead and must be put in the graveyard box(Pokemon Stadium Boxes)
-There are no revives this time
-Dupe clause is in effect and I only get one chance to try again.

The only reason why I put in capturing legendaries is because they are extremely hard to catch, and I probably won't do it. Now onto something else, the way I'm determing genders in this story (Because first generation pokemon games did not have genders, except in the case of the Nidoran evolution lines), I'm using Pokemon Stadium 2 to determine the actual genders of my pokemon.

Sooo, yeah. That's about all the rules and stuff I can think of at the moment. Again, I hoped you all have enjoyed this, and have a fantastic day.
